Ingredients
The key ingredients in the vegan avocado chocolate pudding are:
Ripe Avocados
Avocados act as a thickener and for a creamy texture.
You may think it strange to include avocado in a sweet dessert, but you will only taste the chocolatey goodness!
The avocado flavor is masked with cacao and the natural sweetness of maple syrup. The health benefits of avocados are plenty.
Avocados are rich in vitamins and nutrients and are widely known as good fat. Healthy fats reduce LDL (bad cholesterol) and raise HDL (good cholesterol).
Healthy fats also help the body absorb fat-soluble vitamins and nutrients such as the big 4: vitamins A, D, E, and K.
Avocados are high in fiber, potassium, magnesium, phytonutrients, and antioxidants. These nutrients help improve digestion, brain, heart, eye, and skin health, and more.

Raw Cacao Powder
It is important to note that this says CACAO powder.
Cacao is the original form of chocolate. Cacao provides a rich chocolate flavor.
It is a dark cocoa powder that comes from fermented cacao beans that are later dried and ground into a powder.
Raw Cacao means it has not been heated (roasted). Heat notoriously damages and deteriorates nutrients and enzymes.
Commonly, commercial chocolate is highly processed using chemicals and high heat which significantly degrades any benefits.
Cacao is chock FULL of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and flavonoids. These nutrients boost mood, memory, immune function, heart health, and more!
It is even a fantastic source of iron, calcium, and magnesium. Cacao is one of nature's most potent superfoods!
Pure Vanilla Extract
Vanilla extract is often used in a dessert recipe for its excellent flavor-boosting properties.
However, the health benefits of pure (unprocessed) vanilla extract may be more than most know!
Vanilla has antibacterial, antiviral, antidepressant, and antioxidant properties.
Studies have shown that due to its antioxidant properties vanillin may even help to slow or prevent tumor growth in cancer patients. Incredible!
Pure Maple Syrup
Butternut Mountain Farm Pur...Shop on AmazonWhen searching for maple syrup, it is essential to find pure maple- with no added ingredients.
Maple Syrup still has natural sugars but gets a lower score on the glycemic index.
Maple is a naturally sweet sap derived from the maple tree.
It contains many vitamins, trace minerals, and antioxidants.
The darker the syrup, the more antioxidants, so search for Grade B Maple Syrup to find that variety! Grade A works too!
Maple is one of my favorite sweeteners for a healthy dessert. (see below for a sugar-free alternative to use in place of maple syrup!)
Maple syrup can easily be exchanged for date syrup if you prefer! Check out this article on the uses and benefits.
Additional Superfoods-
Looking to add some more superfoods for an extra boost?
Consider Maca root powder or Lion's mane powder.
Adding superfood powders is a great way to provide an additional nutrient boost to your favorite desserts.
Maca root is an adaptogen that helps the body to balance the effects of stress. It adapts to each individual body's needs.
Maca may help with increasing energy, boosting mood, and balancing hormones.
It may help improve fertility and libido as well as help ease symptoms of PMS or menopause!
Maca is quite a useful superfood, indeed! Keep in mind that maca may slightly add a nutty flavor to the mix. Check out our article on Maca vs Tongkat Ali or our Maca colors guide.
Lion's Mane is a flavorless brain-boosting super-mushroom that is highly antioxidant and anti-inflammatory.
Traditionally, it is used for memory and cognition but may also improve dopamine and serotonin levels which help fight against depression and anxiety.
Instructions
Making chocolate avocado pudding is incredibly easy and fast!
1. Put all ingredients in the food processor and blend avocados until smooth and creamy, periodically scraping down the sides with a spatula.
2. For the best flavor, taste and add more chocolate or sweetener, as desired.
3. Scrape into a covered container and place in the refrigerator for at least 20 minutes.
4. Add berries or other toppings as desired. Serve, and ENJOY!
Substitutions
If you would like to make this vegan dessert sugar-free, consider using pure monk fruit sweetener. This typically comes in a powder but also comes in a liquid. I would start with a quarter cup and add more to taste! Check out this article comparing natural sugar substitutes.
If you do not have maple syrup, you can substitute it with raw honey. It is important to get raw honey. Heat turns honey into a simple sugar while eliminating all of its enzymes and nutrients!
Variations
Options to add different flavor profiles to your pudding include:
- Spicy - add a dash of chili powder or cayenne for a bit of a spicy kick!
- Added flavor - consider some Ceylon Cinnamon (Ceylon cinnamon is the most nutrient-dense and least processed version). It is full of antioxidants and often used to help insulin resistance. Additionally, it can lower blood pressure, and fight cancer and even Alzheimer's!
- Creamy - some variations to this recipe suggest adding a bit of milk to it. We like to stay away from dairy as it is inflammatory so we recommend using plant-based milk like almond milk, oat milk, flax milk, or coconut milk!
- Frozen- pour leftovers into a popsicle mold or pudding cup and freeze for a pudding pop dessert!
Equipment

Avocado Chocolate Pudding stays fresh in the fridge for a couple of days. I recommend consuming within 2-4 days. You can freeze it if you like, for up to 6 months.
Top tips
Be sure to choose avocados that are ripe, but not too ripe. Overripe avocados will taste off and under-ripe avocado will not blend as smoothly. Choose dark green and soft avocados.
*In order to fill a standard food processor, it may be helpful to double the recipe and save the leftovers!
