Health Benefits of Sea Moss Gel

First in our spotlight is sea moss gel, often celebrated as the "ocean's superfood." Harvested from the pristine depths of the ocean, this marine algae, scientifically known as Chondrus crispus or carrageen moss, is a nutritional powerhouse.

a photo of purple raw irish sea moss with white background.

Sea moss is a type of seaweed that is a purplish red algae and is rich in essential minerals, vitamins, and antioxidants, offering numerous health benefits.

Raw sea moss is transformed into gel form to make it more palatable. It can also be used as a thickening agent for recipes.

Its distinctive taste prompts consumers to get creative with this incredible superfood turning it into a nutritious beverage. There are many options for sea moss drinks that we will discuss below.

Irish sea moss gel is known for its anti-inflammatory properties, high levels of iodine, ability to improve energy levels, soothe irritated digestive tracts, boost the immune system, promote healthy skin, fight free radicals, and so much more.

All of this is due to the natural extra nutrients in this superfood. In fact, it is considered a complete food source due to its impressive nutrient profile.

Sea moss benefits many health problems including improving thyroid function, heart health, supporting weight loss to name a few. Be sure to discuss any changes with your healthcare provider before starting any new regimen to be sure it is safe for you!

One of the most popular ways to use sea moss gel is by incorporating it into hot drinks like tea. However, there's a concern that heating sea moss may diminish its nutritional value, particularly its iodine content. However, there are methods to minimize this effect.

High-Quality Tea

On the other side of the spectrum, we have tea, an ancient elixir that has stood the test of time. From soothing herbal infusions to the vibrant complexity of green and black teas, this beverage has been a source of comfort and holistic well-being for generations.

Beyond its delightful flavors, tea offers an array of healthful properties that align with our pursuit of natural wellness.

Now, the question that brings us here today is whether we can harness the combined power of sea moss gel and tea. Can these two elements of nature harmonize in a way that not only tantalizes our taste buds but also enhances our overall health and vitality?

It is important to choose high-quality tea like matcha, yerba mate, mauby, sencha, or hojicha tea to name a few. These tea leaves are packed with antioxidants that add to the benefits needed to start the day off right.

These are also teas that are low in acidity as compared to many forms of coffee.

Always choose organic tea that is minimally processed. It is also best to get loose-leaf tea or use unbleached tea bags.

Methods to Preserve Nutritional Value

Concerned about the potential loss of nutritional value when heating sea moss gel? Here are some methods to reduce this effect when making sea moss tea:

  1. Low Heat: Use hot water that's not boiling to make your tea. Higher temperatures may break down some of the nutrients, so a lower heat preserves more of the goodness.
  2. Quick Steep: Don't let your tea steep for too long. A shorter steeping time can help retain the nutritional benefits of sea moss.
  3. Add After Brewing: Another option is to brew your tea first and then add 1-2 tablespoons of sea moss gel to your cup. This way, the gel doesn't undergo prolonged heating.

  • 1-2 TB sea moss gel
  • 1 cup of spring water (cold or room temperature)
  • ⅛ th teaspoon spice blend Ceylon cinnamon Nutmeg, Black Pepper
  • Optionally add almond milk or any other non-dairy milk substitutes
  • 1 Organic unbleached tea bag

Instructions

  • In a cup or mug, add one tea bag and one serving of your sea moss gel. You can adjust the serving size depending on your preference for thickness.
  • Pour in one cup of spring water. Using cold or room temperature water is an easy way to preserve the nutritional value of the sea moss, as it avoids prolonged exposure to high heat. However, warm or hot water is okay too!
  • Spice Blend: Sprinkle a pinch of your chosen spice blend (Ceylon cinnamon, ginger, or nutmeg) into the cup. These spices not only enhance the taste but also offer their own potential health benefits.
  • Stir the mixture gently to combine the sea moss gel, water, and spices. You'll notice that the sea moss gel starts to dissolve into the water, creating a silky, nutrient-rich consistency.
  • Let your Tea sit for a few minutes, allowing the flavors to meld and infuse. If you've used a spice blend, you'll experience a warm, soothing aroma.
  • Give it one final stir and enjoy your sea moss tea as a nutritious beverage that's not only easy to prepare but also packed with health benefits. Add milk if desired.

Hello there! My name is Natalie. My passion is creating and sharing healthy recipes, tips, and affirmations for a healthy mind and body. I am a wife, mom, certified holistic nutrition specialist, hypnotherapist, reiki master, and healthy food blogger! I enjoy learning, creating, and sharing healthy recipes that the whole family will love.

Since 2005 I began studying yoga, natural and holistic healing, nutrition, energy work, subconscious work, and more. I attended Southwest Institute for Healing Arts in Tempe, Arizona, and received several certifications as well as a Mind Body Wellness Practitioner Diploma in 2017. I spent many years looking for solutions for pain, stress, illness, and fatigue. I found that prescriptions, poor lifestyle and food choices, and negative self-talk were causing me to stay stuck. Throughout my studies, I transformed my life. It has become my passion to share what I learned in hopes of helping others to heal themselves.

Over the years, I have discovered firsthand the impact of food choices on health, energy, pain, and more. I am here to share how impactful it is to eat clean, natural, nutrient-dense foods. I have spent several years learning and experimenting with healthier cooking and eating, and it feels amazing!

When learning new ways to eat, I found it often required reprogramming outdated thoughts and beliefs to succeed.

Meditation, guided imagery, affirmations, and setting intentions are powerful tools I incorporate into my recipes and blogs. I will often share suggested affirmations or intentions within my recipes that will help you to amplify your healthy eating experience if you choose!
