    Why We Use Natural Toothpaste

In this blog post, we dive into the world of hydroxyapatite toothpaste and explore the top natural toothpaste makers renowned for their effectiveness in remineralizing teeth. Get ready to uncover the secret to a truly radiant smile as we reveal the finest options for tooth remineralization, guiding you toward optimal oral health the natural way.

As a Holistic Nutrition Specialist, mom, and health and wellness enthusiast, I am always looking for effective home and personal products with natural ingredients.

Dental products are one of the most important products to maintain overall health for the whole family. As most already know, proper oral hygiene prevents gum disease, tooth decay, and bad breath, all of which affect our health, quality of life, as well as social relationships.

Unfortunately, all toothpaste brands are not created equal.  Many toothpaste formulas contain ingredients that are harmful ingredients like artificial colors, sulfates, artificial sweeteners, parabens, and even fluoride.  Don't worry, we've finally found an excellent company that provides effective dental care products. Wellnesse. Use coupon code MINDFULLYHEALTHY10 for 10% off your order.

Fluoride toothpaste has been the gold standard among dentists for many years to strengthen tooth enamel. It is often included in mouthwash, floss, and even perform fluoride treatments. It's also in public water.  However, recently we are discovering the dangers of excessive fluoride. First, we will discuss the dangers of fluoride and the benefits of choosing fluoride-free toothpaste with other natural ingredients.

    Dangers of Fluoride

For decades, fluoride has been heralded as a vital component in oral care, credited with preventing tooth decay and promoting dental health. However, an increasing number of studies and concerns have emerged, shedding light on the potential dangers associated with fluoride consumption. As a result, many individuals are now seeking fluoride-free alternatives, recognizing the numerous benefits they offer.

A photo of an open book with the all caps letters FLUORIDE F on it with a fountain pen set on top of the book. Above it is a couple of chemical beakers and notebooks.

One of the primary concerns surrounding fluoride is its toxicity. Recently, studies have shown fluoride to be a neurotoxin that interferes with many processes in the body, including children's neuro-development.

Excessive fluoride intake, whether through drinking water, toothpaste, or other sources, can lead to a condition called dental fluorosis. This condition causes the teeth to become discolored and pitted, and in severe cases, can even weaken the enamel.

Furthermore, research suggests that fluoride can disrupt hormonal balance and contribute to various health issues such as thyroid dysfunction, impaired brain development in children, and skeletal fluorosis.

    Fluoride-Free Toothpaste Benefits

One significant benefit of fluoride-free toothpaste is the avoidance of potential health risks associated with excessive fluoride exposure. It provides a safer alternative by eliminating the potential toxicity and side effects of fluoride. This is particularly important in preventing conditions like dental fluorosis, which can cause tooth discoloration and enamel weakening.

Moreover, fluoride-free toothpaste is often formulated with natural and non-toxic ingredients, making it ideal for individuals with sensitive teeth or who have had an allergic reaction to traditional toothpastes. These formulations offer effective cleaning and protection without the risk of irritation or adverse reactions that can occur with fluoride-containing toothpaste.

Fluoride-free toothpaste aligns with holistic dental care practices, emphasizing the use of natural and environmentally friendly products. By choosing fluoride-free options, individuals can maintain their commitment to a holistic approach to oral health while enjoying the benefits of a clean and fresh mouth.

Many fluoride-free toothpaste formulations also incorporate other beneficial ingredients, such as hydroxyapatite, xylitol, and herbal extracts. These ingredients aid in the remineralization process, combat bad bacteria that contribute to tooth decay, and provide a refreshing and enjoyable oral care experience.

It's important to note that fluoride-free toothpaste does not compromise oral health. Regular brushing, flossing, and routine dental check-ups remain essential for optimal oral hygiene.

However, by opting for fluoride-free toothpaste, individuals can prioritize their well-being while embracing a more natural and safer approach to their daily oral care routine. We've studied and tried several different brands of natural toothpaste brands, and finally found a brand that makes an effective toothpaste that checks all the boxes! Let's explore more about the key ingredient, hydroxyapatite that makes all of this possible.

    What is Hydroxyapatite?

Hydroxyapatite is a naturally occurring mineral form of calcium apatite that plays a crucial role in the structure and composition of our teeth and bones. It is a major component of tooth enamel, the outer protective layer of our teeth, as well as the hard mineralized matrix of our bones.

Chemically, hydroxyapatite consists of calcium, phosphorus (phosphate ions), and hydroxide ions. Its unique crystal structure gives it excellent strength and durability, making it a vital mineral for the integrity and resilience of our teeth and bones.

In oral care, the benefits of hydroxyapatite have gained significant attention for its ability to remineralize and repair tooth enamel. When tooth enamel undergoes mineral loss due to acid attacks produced by harmful bacteria or dietary factors, hydroxyapatite can help restore the lost minerals and strengthen the enamel structure. It binds with the tooth surface, forming a protective layer that acts as a barrier against acid erosion and tooth decay.

Hydroxyapatite has also been used in various medical and dental applications. It serves as a biomaterial in bone grafting procedures, helping to regenerate and repair bone defects. In dentistry, hydroxyapatite-based materials are used in dental implants, fillings, and restorative treatments.

One of the advantages of hydroxyapatite is its biocompatibility, meaning it is well-tolerated by the human body and does not cause adverse reactions. It closely resembles the composition of our natural tooth enamel and bone, making it an ideal material for dental and bone-related applications.

Overall, hydroxyapatite is a remarkable mineral that plays a crucial role in maintaining the health and strength of our teeth and bones. Its ability to remineralize tooth enamel and its biocompatible nature make it a valuable ingredient in oral care products aimed at promoting optimal oral health and protecting against tooth decay.

    The Problem with Glycerine

In our quest to find a non-toxic toothpaste to remineralize our family's teeth naturally, we have tried several brands. Many of them my husband and kids weren't totally fond of.  A lot of this had to do with taste and texture, I believe.  Eventually, we found a few brands that everyone did like. Boka Ela mint toothpaste and Risewell mineral toothpaste were two of the brands we tried and liked. They offer many natural ingredients and they feel and taste good when brushing, and after.

However, upon further research, I learned that both of these brands and many other brands with hydroxyapatite have glycerine in the ingredient list. Because of this, we kept searching and found our favorite toothpaste and natural product line, Wellnesse. We will discuss more about why they are the best below.  But first, the problem with glycerine:

In order for hydroxyapatite to do its job, and maintain its safe and effective reputation, it is important to find a toothpaste that has all-natural ingredients that also avoid glycerine.

Glycerin is used by toothpaste companies as it acts as a moisturizing and lubricating agent, preventing the toothpaste from drying out and providing a smooth consistency. Additionally, glycerin functions as a thickener prevents ingredient separation, and contributes to the overall taste and stability of the toothpaste.

Glycerin is not inherently bad, per se, but some concerns have been raised regarding its impact on tooth remineralization. Glycerin can form a thin coating on the teeth, which may hinder the natural process of mineral absorption from saliva and hinder enamel repair.

This prevents the hydroxyapatite and other ingredients from remineralizing the teeth to their full potential.  Therefore, it is best to find a toothpaste that is not only fluoride-free but glycerine-free as well.

Other Ingredients to Avoid in Toothpaste

When searching for healthy natural hydroxyapatite toothpaste, it is advisable to avoid certain ingredients that may be potentially harmful or counterproductive to oral health. Here are a few ingredients to watch out for:

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS): SLS is a surfactant commonly used in toothpaste to create foam and provide a sense of cleanliness. However, it can cause oral tissue irritation and may contribute to canker sores in some individuals. Choosing an SLS-free toothpaste can be a gentler option.

Artificial Sweeteners: Toothpaste may contain artificial sweeteners such as saccharin, aspartame, or sucralose to enhance taste. While they add sweetness without sugar, it is advisable to avoid artificial sweeteners due to multiple health concerns. Opting for toothpaste sweetened with natural alternatives like xylitol or organic stevia is a healthier choice.

Synthetic Dyes: Toothpaste may contain synthetic dyes to achieve vibrant colors. These dyes, such as FD&C Blue No. 1 or Yellow No. 5, serve no functional purpose in oral care and may have links to allergic reactions or hyperactivity in some individuals. Look for toothpaste that uses natural colorants or is dye-free.

Triclosan: Triclosan is an antibacterial agent found in some toothpaste formulations. However, it has raised concerns regarding its contribution to antibiotic resistance and hormonal disruption. Choosing triclosan-free toothpaste is a safer alternative.

Parabens: Parabens are preservatives commonly used in various personal care products, including toothpaste, to prevent microbial growth. Some studies suggest that parabens may have endocrine-disrupting effects. Opt for toothpaste that is free from parabens or uses alternative natural preservatives.

Titanium Dioxide: Titanium dioxide irritates the nose and throat. It has the potential to accumulate in the body and has been shown to be carcinogenic.

Carrageenan: Carrageenan is often considered undesirable in toothpaste due to its potential to cause inflammation and digestive issues.

    Wellnesse Toothpaste Ingredients

    Hydroxyapatite:

The toothpaste incorporates micro hydroxyapatite particles, ranging from 5-8 micrometers in size, closely resembling nano size while being derived naturally. In contrast, nano-hydroxyapatite is synthetically produced.

    Silica:

Hydrated silica serves as a gentle abrasive, effectively removing plaque without causing enamel damage. With an abrasiveness scale rating of 70-90, it falls within the medium range, providing natural teeth whitening benefits in a carefully calibrated quantity.

    Sorbitol:

Derived from tapioca starch, sorbitol acts as a binding ingredient, helping maintain the formulation's integrity without posing any safety concerns.

    Xylitol:

The toothpaste includes xylitol, a non-fermentable ingredient that prevents the conversion of mouth bacteria into harmful acids responsible for tooth decay and gum disease.

    Neem:

Neem effectively targets the strep mutans bacteria, known for causing tooth decay and gum disease.

    Aloe Vera:

Aloe vera, with its antibacterial properties, helps eliminate disease-causing bacteria while providing teeth-whitening benefits and reducing staining.

    Calcium Carbonate:

The toothpaste utilizes calcium carbonate to remove plaque, debris, and surface stains, promoting a cleaner and brighter smile.

    Stevia:

Wellnesse's toothpaste products are all sweetened with stevia rebaudiana extract. Stevia is a naturally derived sweetener with zero sugar. Learn more about stevia and other natural keto sweeteners here.

    No Glycerin:

The toothpaste is formulated without glycerin to support the natural remineralization process and prevent potential effects like weaker and yellow teeth.

    No Titanium Dioxide:

The toothpaste avoids the use of titanium dioxide, which may cause nose and throat irritations and potentially carry carcinogenic risks.

    No Carrageenan:

The toothpaste excludes carrageenan to prevent possible intestinal issues and mitigate any potential carcinogenic properties.

    No Fluoride:

The toothpaste is fluoride-free to prioritize safety, avoiding potential risks associated with fluoride, including thyroid dysfunction and developmental neurotoxicity. It offers a safer option for oral care, minimizing the possibility of skeletal fluorosis.

    Nano Hydroxyapatite vs Micro Hydroxyapatite

Nano hydroxyapatite and micro hydroxyapatite are two different forms of hydroxyapatite used in oral care products. Nano-hydroxyapatite toothpaste is synthetically derived, consisting of extremely small particles in the nanometer range, while micro hydroxyapatite is naturally derived and composed of larger particles in the micron range. Nano is typically measured in 1-100 nanometers and micro is measured in 1-100 micrometers. Nano-hydroxyapatite is known to be small enough to penetrate the surface of the tooth and remineralize deep into its surface effectively.

Micro-hydroxyapatite does the same but is larger in surface size, so takes longer to get into the tooth to mineralize it. To achieve the most natural and effective size, Wellnesse uses the smallest possible microparticle size of 5-8um. This micro hydroxyapatite is as close as can be to nano size while keeping things naturally derived.

Both have shown effectiveness in promoting remineralization and improving oral health. However, when choosing a product, it is always best to opt for minimally processed and natural ingredients over synthetically derived or significantly modified ingredients.  That is one of the many reasons Wellnesse's products are particularly attractive to us, is their commitment to quality, natural ingredients, and transparency.

    The Oral Microbiome

This is quite revolutionary compared to the decades of traditional advice from dentists and doctors. We once believed that the key to fresh breath and preventing cavities was killing all bacteria with harsh chemicals like fluoride, triclosan, and alcohol. In reality, these ingredients weaken and disrupt the mouth’s delicate microbial balance, leaving the entire body vulnerable to disease and infection.

A woman with shoulder length naturally curly hair is smiling and holding a piece of dental floss next to her teeth

The impact of the mouth on the body is significant because it is interconnected with various systems. The oral microbiome, consisting of microorganisms, can spread throughout the body via saliva and absorption by the oral mucosal membranes.

Disruptions in the oral microbiome not only harm the teeth and gums but also pose a threat to other bodily systems. This imbalance of bacteria (killing good bacteria too) can have serious consequences, as evidenced by the link between gum disease and heart disease.

The bacteria that affect the gums can lead to dangerous inflammation in the heart muscles, emphasizing the interconnectedness between oral and overall health.

    Why We Love Wellnesse

As a result of discovering this new health information, I felt compelled to give my young children a better start on oral health and begin to reverse the years of damage for myself and my husband.  We have experienced toothaches and spots that have been reduced and removed while using this remineralizing and whitening toothpaste or the children's toothpaste!

When using other products in the past, we have always ended up in the dentist's chair for another filling or procedure once a toothache sets in. Since we started using Wellnesse's hydroxyapatite, we have been able to reverse toothaches that were heading down the old painful path.

We still visit the dentist for regular checkups, however, the need to gain treatment has significantly diminished due to our healthy lifestyle and product choices!

We love Wellnesse and their toothpaste (and other products) because of the high integrity of the company, its ingredients are all-natural, good for you, sustainably sourced, and they work!  In fact, it is the only toothpaste that we've found that has all the right ingredients and has worked for our entire family.

Not only that, but the goal of their toothpaste is to restore natural balance in the body, specifically the mouth.  Its ingredients contribute to natural remineralization to reverse tooth decay while restoring a healthy bacterial balance (oral microbiome) in the mouth.  To top it off, Wellnesse's product packaging is 100% recyclable, biodegradable, or compostable.

Hello - is there ANY toothpaste that is healthy with OUT mint? Mint disrupts the thyroid big time. What's with the mint in all the natural tooth pastes? I can't find one with out it!

The turmeric drink looks good BUT it decrease iron via very high oxalates which are a no-no when you have stones and other issues from.

      Thank you,

Thank you for your comment! Yes, my family loves the strawberry flavor toothpaste from Wellnesse! (Links in article) It is labelled as a kids toothpaste, but it is just as effective for adults. It has a very mild natural flavor.

Concerning the turmeric drinks, if you are concerned about oxalates, you can use curcumin powder. Most curcumin extracting processes removes the oxalates in the turmeric and concentrates the main compound that offers the most anti-inflammatory and antioxidant benefits of the turmeric. Hope this helps!
